Book Review: Sherlock Holmes & the Singular Affair by M. K. Wiseman

Before Baker Street, there was Montague.

Before partnership with a former army doctor recently returned from Afghanistan, Sherlock Holmes had but the quiet company of his own great intellect. Solitary he might be but, living as he did for the thrill of the chase, it was enough.

For a little while, at the least, it was enough.

That is, until a client arrives at his door with a desperate plea and an invitation into a world of societal scandal and stage door dandies. Thrust deep in an all-consuming role and charged with the safe-keeping of another, Holmes must own to his limits or risk danger to others besides himself in this the case of the aluminium crutch.

Why Should You Read This?

A prequel to the Sherlock Holmes series, this was a huge risk by the author. It is tremendously difficult to follow in the footsteps of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or even to rethink the Sherlock Holmes universe in your own style. While I strongly believe it is absolutely unfair comparing anybody’s work with the likes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I did enjoy the book and liked the author’s writing style.

Sometimes when you read these retellings, or prequels, or sequels – they leave a bad aftertaste in your mouth. It’s like someone has tainted something you hold dear. Fortunately, that was not my experience here. I believe that when you build on someone’s work, one should respect the original body of work. I strongly felt that Wiseman did that.

For readers who enjoyed Sherlock Holmes, and would love a new colour to the character – this is a definite recommendation.
