Meet the Author:

British crime thriller writer A.A. Abbott (also known as Helen Blenkinsop) enjoys escaping with an exciting and emotional read, and that’s what she aims to write too. Based in the city of Bristol in England’s beautiful West Country, she’s shared her love for the city by writing about it in her latest psychological thriller.

Lies at Her Door is Helen’s ninth book. She’s had help from readers on subjects as varied as police procedure, philosophy and music. She’s grateful to them and to editor Katharine D’Souza for making huge improvements to the story.

Like 10% of us, many of Helen’s family are dyslexic. While she is not, she wants her books to be enjoyed by readers with dyslexia and visual impairment too. She publishes her thrillers in a Large Print dyslexia-friendly edition as well as standard paperback and ebook versions. (You can also adjust the font on your electronic device to suit your needs.)

A member of the Alliance of Independent Authors, Helen likes speaking to book groups, business networks and social circles. She also has fun reading thrillers and short stories at live fiction events and on Zoom. If you’re a book blogger, litfest organiser, reviewer or simply adore books, she’d love to hear from you.

Author Interview

1. Do you like reading as well as writing? Tell us about a few of your favorite books.

I still remember the thrill of learning to read at the age of five, and I’ve been a committed bookworm ever since! I admire hundreds of writers; some of my favorites are Lisa Jewell, John Grisham, Hilary Mantel and Guy Gavriel Kay. You can tell from the list that, as well as crime and thrillers, I enjoy historical fiction and fantasy. The biggest draw is a story with emotion. Guy Gavriel Kay’s “Tigana” made a huge impression on me. Without giving too much away, the hero gains his dearest wish at the end of the story, but loses so much more. I cried buckets. It’s unlikely I’d write an ending as sad as that.

2. Okay, so you like reading an eclectic mix of genres. Why do you write thrillers?

I enjoy injecting tension and twists into a story, and thrillers lend themselves to that. My books focus especially on dysfunctional relationships. In “Lies at Her Door”, Lucy Freeman is a thirty-two-year-old woman still living with her parents. They’ve never taken the time to understand her. She is emotionally closer to the online friends she has never met.

3. Lucy in your book, “Lies at Her Door”, is a chocoholic. Are you?

Absolutely! Poor Lucy has a love-hate relationship with chocolate, bingeing on it and then beating herself up. Like her, I remember eating nothing but celery for a week as a teenager. It gave me a flatter stomach, but it wasn’t worth feeling faint 24-7. I’ve trained myself to have a responsible attitude to food. Most days, I indulge in a couple of squares of dark chocolate. As a special treat, it’s a bar of milk chocolate with sea salt.

4. Do you write in silence, or do you play music?

I was brought up in a large family, so I’m used to hustle and bustle around me. I can write stories on trains, planes and buses. For “Lies at Her Door”, I often listened to music the characters would like: madrigals in Lucy’s case and Britpop for her brother. I also curated a Spotify playlist of guitar bands with an upbeat sound, so I wouldn’t get too depressed by Lucy’s problems.

5. What do you hope your readers will take away from your books?

“Hope” is the word! No situation, however terrible, is permanent. Lucy begins “Lies at Her Door” believing she’s a chubby loser. Yet she finds her inner strength when she’s plunged into danger. Even if I don’t write a sugar-coated happy ending, I like to leave my readers with hope for the characters they care about.

Why Should You Read This?

The book is well written with plenty of suspense. For a psychological thriller, the book is short, but fast-paced. I couldn’t keep the book down, and it is a solid page-turner. A solid recommendation for fans of psychological thrillers.
