HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (MERCER)–The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of a man who was critically injured when his scooter collided with a civilian vehicle in Hamilton, Mercer County, on May 25. He died in the hospital two days later.
The decedent has been identified as Francis De La Cruz Abad, 21, of Trenton., N.J. The police officer who attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop of Mr. De La Cruz Abad is Detective Brian Davis of the Hamilton Township Police Division.
The accident occurred just after 9 p.m. on May 25 near the intersection of Route 33 and Whitehorse-Mercerville Road. Detective Davis was in an unmarked police vehicle when he observed Mr. De La Cruz Abad operating a Yamaha scooter without a helmet. Detective Davis attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, but Mr. De La Cruz Abad continued traveling westbound on Route 33 and collided with a Dodge Caravan, whose driver was attempting to turn left into the Mercerville Shopping Center from Route 33 eastbound. Mr. De La Cruz Abad was thrown from the scooter and struck the windshield of the van. He was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he died at approximately 3 p.m. on May 27.
The investigation is being conducted pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, P.L.2019, c.1, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

Police investigating serious crash involving moped-style bike

HAMILTION TOWNSHIP, NJ (MERCER)–At 10:34 a.m. Hamilton Township Fire Department and Robbinsville Fire Department were initially dispatched to a roof fire at the Home Depot at 750 Route 130. While in route firefighters reported seeing a large column of smoke and an “all hands” was called sending the full first alarm and additional equipment to the scene, Bordentown Township, Hope Fire Company of Allentown-Upper Freehold, Ewing Township Fire Department, Signal 22 Canteen Unit, rehab units and others were sent to the scene. Firefighters on the roof reported heavy fire involving solar panels.
After about a 20 minute firefight firefighters were able to contain the blaze and kept it from spreading saving the Home Depot and its millions of dollars of contents.
Battalion Chief Ferdie Mather told MidJersey.News that the fire went to 3-Alarms and was fully under control within an hour after arriving on location.
Mather said that the fire department was able to deploy the fire department’s drone for both the fire investigation and searching for hot spots after the fire since the drone is equipped with thermal imaging technology.
Battalion Chief Ferdie Mather stated that there were two minor back injuries to firefighters who were fighting the fire. Mather said that they were being treated this afternoon at the medical center.
Hamilton Township Mayor Jeff Martin said, ““I commend the Hamilton Fire Division for their excellent work in getting the fire under control quickly. I also want to thank neighboring fire departments and the Hamilton Police Division for their assistance in protecting our community.”
The Hamilton Township Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.
