British crime thriller writer A.A. Abbott (also known as Helen Blenkinsop) enjoys escaping with an exciting and emotional read, and that’s what she aims to write. She also sets her fiction in the cities where she’s lived and worked: London, Bristol and Birmingham. Currently based in Bristol, she’s set her latest psychological thriller in the city’s swanky Clifton district. Inspiration for the story came when a sinkhole appeared in Clifton on Christmas Day 2020, revealing a collapsed cellar under a park. In real life, no-one was singing carols there at the time and no skeleton was discovered, but writers often stretch the boundaries of truth!

Why Should You Read This?
How does one react when the story begins with the appearance of a sinkhole? Abbott has her readers hooked from the first sentence. The book heavily emphasizes on various themes including sibling rivalry, managing parent expectations, self-esteem, infidelity, etc. The story is a heavy read, in a good sense.
I enjoyed the switch between narrators – Lucy and Neil. Neil and Sherry’s camaraderie stole the show. The author could write an entire series revolving around them and the crimes they solve – and I would be a loyal reader. The pace does fall flat sometimes, however, I enjoyed the characters. I just felt I was rooting more for Neil than Lucy.
Pick this up if you love thrillers, and enjoy ones with heavy themes.
