2 Charged In Shooting That Wounded On Duty Trenton Firefighter Inside Firehouse – MidJersey.News

Trenton, N.J. – Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson today announced that the Trenton Police Department (TPD), with assistance from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team, apprehended the two suspects involved in this shooting without incident.

Members of the Mercer County Shooting Response Team are investigating a shooting incident which occurred on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at approximately 8:38 PM in the area of 257 North Willow Street. It was during this incident that an on-duty firefighter of the Trenton Fire Department was struck by a stray bullet. Following an extensive investigation, the TPD and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Kena L. West and Zaequan Cofield.  

Kena L. West of Trenton, New Jersey was formally charged with criminal attempted murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Zaequan Cofield of Trenton, New Jersey was formally charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of armor penetrating rounds, possession of a defaced firearm, possession of a high capacity magazine, endangering the welfare of a child and obstructing the administration of law.

These charges and allegations are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. This is an ongoing investigation.

TRENTON, NJ (MERCER)–Trenton Police Detective Lieutenant Bethesda Stokes told MidJersey.News that members of the Mercer County Shooting Response Team investigating a shooting incident which occurred on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at approximately 8:38 PM in the area of 257 North Willow Street, where an on-duty firefighter of the Trenton Fire Department was struck by a stray bullet, have apprehended and charged Kena L. West following an extensive investigation. With the assistance of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team, West along with Zaequan Cofield were apprehended without incident on the morning of May 7, 2022.

TRENTON, NJ (MERCER)–Before 9:00 p.m., a city firefighter narrowly escaped serious injury when he was grazed by a stray bullet while he was on duty working out at the firehouse of Engine 1 and Ladder 1 on Calhoun Street Tuesday evening (April 26). Trenton Emergency Medical Service (TEMS) personnel were dispatched to an area of North Willow Street for a reported shooting. A short time later, TEMS resources were sent to the Calhoun Street firehouse – located a block or so away.

MidJersey.News talked to the injured firefighter by phone tonight and he is doing well. He has a minor graze wound to the left arm and is in good spirits. The injured firefighter stated that he was working out the elliptical trainer in the firehouse gym on the 2nd floor of the station and heard approximately 22 shots fired outside the station and down the block. One of those bullets came through the window and struck him on the left arm while he tried to get off the machine to take cover. The firefighter was immediately met by the crew in the station who came to his aid and checked for any other wounds and provided treatment. The firefighter stated that one bullet came through the window of the gym that struck him, and two other bullets went through the kitchen of the firehouse and one struck the refrigerator.

Timothy J. Carroll, Public Information Officer for the City of Trenton told MidJersey.News that the firefighter was working out at the firehouse and has a minor laceration.  Trenton Police received 12 shots on ShotSpotter, 11 cases recovered at the scene. There is no suspect at this time. Trenton Police has an investigation underway.
