EWING, NJ (MERCER) – A house fire was quickly extinguished by Ewing Township fire companies on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12). The blaze at 84 Florence Avenue was reported shortly after 4:15 p.m. Smoke was visible from the roof line of the two-story home when the first firefighters arrived a few minutes later. Crews advanced a pair of 1.75-inch hoselines into the house and quickly located and knocked down a fire in the attic area. A rapid intervention team from Hamilton Township Fire Department also responded to the scene but their services were ultimately not needed. The blaze was officially placed under control at 4:40 p.m.

Suspect Charged in Saturday Officer-Involved Shooting

4:00 p.m. UPDATE: Early this morning at approximately 1215 AM, members of the Trenton Police Street Crimes Unit were involved in a Police shooting resulting from an encounter with an individual in a motor vehicle. During this incident, the driver of the suspect auto was shot by one officer and remains in stable condition. The investigation is being conducted by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey State Police, which is standard protocol for these incidents. The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has been notified, as well. No officers appear to have been injured. All officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is also standard protocol. The scene has been processed and the investigation is ongoing. — Executive Assistant Prosecutor Michael Borgos from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

9:30 a.m. UPDATE: Michael Borgos from the Mercer County Prosecutors Office told MidJersey.News “The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office was contacted by the Trenton Police Department for an officer involved shooting that occurred on the 500 block of Centre Street shortly after midnight on 2/12/22. The Prosecutor’s Office is investigating pursuant to Attorney General guidelines.”

TRENTON, NJ (MERCER)–Around 12:18 a.m. Trenton EMS, Capital Health Paramedics and Trenton Fire Department were dispatched to the 500 Block of Centre Street between Ingleton Street and Scott Alley for an officer involved shooting. Trenton Fire Department and EMS arrived on scene quickly and started treatment. Ambulances and paramedics transported two people to Capital Health Regional Medical Center with two trauma alerts called.

Trenton Police had a crime scene set up in the area and an investigation was underway.

An unidentified resident in the area showed MidJersey.news security camera video and the video showed a male who appeared to be stumbling while walking down the street then goes off camera, a few moments later a group could be seen running in the same direction of the man and go off camera, police with their lights on go in the same direction and go off camera. An audio of what sounded like a gunshot was heard. A few moments later Trenton Fire and EMS arrived on scene. It is unclear if the video was only recording when movement in front of camera or sound was heard and subjects were off camera when the sound of what sounded like a gunshot was heard.

The scene tonight in the 500 Block of Centre Street

Hamilton, NJ:  On February 10, 2022 a 28 year old female from Trenton, NJ was shot once at the Pioneer Gas Station located at 2101 South Broad St. in Hamilton, NJ.  Responding officers quickly provided aid to the victim.  It was discovered that the victim sustained a gunshot wound to her lower right torso. A suspect was developed after the victim identified her estranged ex-boyfriend, Shakur A. Wright of Trenton, NJ, as her shooter with whom she has an active restraining order against.  Detective T. Clugsten, Detective P. Quick, Hamilton Anti-Crime Unit Officers and The New Jersey State Police Crime Suppression Central Unit immediately began trying to locate Wright utilizing addresses the victim stated he frequents. 

He was ultimately taken into custody on February 11, 2022 without incident by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Fugitive Unit on the first block of Asbury Street in Trenton, NJ.  A handgun, believed to be used by Wright in the shooting, was also recovered near the scene of the arrest.  Wright was transported to Mercer County Corrections Center for the following charges: Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (handgun), Possession of Weapon (handgun) for an Unlawful Purpose, Certain Persons not to Possess Weapons or Ammunition, Violation of a Restraining Order issued under the New Jersey Prevention of Domestic Violence Act.  The victim is in stable condition and expected to survive.

Despite having been charged, every defendant is presumed innocent until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
