PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia Fire Department reports that around 6:30 a.m., PFD responded to a large fire under I-95 near the Cottman Avenue exit in Northeast Philly. PFD placed the fire under control at 7:30 a.m., but there is an ongoing emergency response from dozens of City, State, and Federal Agencies. I-95 North and South bound lanes are closed. Please exercise extreme caution and follow safety signs if you’re in that area.

Philadelphia Office Of Emergency Management reports that all lanes of I-95 closed in both directions between Woodhaven and Aramingo exits due to fire/road collapse. Other streets closed for the response. Avoid area. Plan and seek alternative travel routes.

If traveling though Philadelphia on I-95 and surrounding roadways plan a detour for the following week.

This severe damage to I-95 reminds us of the Great Tire Fire of 1996 where a 8-Alarm fire consumed 10,000+ tires and damaged I-95 closing the roadway for 8 days. (If we can find the negatives will post photos from the 1996 fire)

Ed Note: If you have plans to go to PHL Airport or Philadelphia from our area avoid I-95 in Pennsylvania. Use alternative routes though Jersey and use the Walt Whitman Bridge or Benjamin Franklin Bridge and if traffic is real bad go further south to Commodore Barry Bridge to get around this mess for the following week or so.

UPDATE: Damaged roadway on I-95 southbound between Exit 32 – Academy Rd/Linden Ave and Exit 30 – Cottman Ave/Rhawn St. All lanes closed.
