TRENTON, NJ (MERCER)–City firefighters tackled a blaze involving a pair of vacant houses late this afternoon (Sunday, July 9). Dispatched about 4:50 p.m., responding firefighters reported seeing a column of smoke in the sky as they approached the scene. When they arrived, crews from Engines 6, 7 and 10, Ladder 4 and Rescue 1 were confronted by heavy smoke billowing from the fronts and flames showing from the rears of 12 and 14 Hurley Street, near Hart Avenue, a block from North Clinton Avenue.
While the structures were supposed to be vacant, 911 callers reported seeing people fleeing from the buildings prior to firefighters’ arrival. The “All Hands” signal for a working fire was immediately ordered by Battalion Chief Ross Dale and the balance of the first alarm – Engine 1, Ladder 1 and Special Services 1 – was sent to the scene. Four hoselines were placed in service and the blaze was ultimately declared under control at 5:25 p.m. The fire’s cause is being investigated by law enforcement and fire officials.
