TRENTON-ROBBINSVILLE, NJ (MERCER)–Governor Phil Murphy announced in the COVID-19 Press Confrence and via Facebook that youth and adult sports are being place on full pause from December 5th to January 2, 2021. See below as we wait for further direction and a release from the Governor’s Office with an Executive Order that should be available later today. Those items will be added to this story when available. Also the NJSIAA headquartered in Robbinsville has released a statement via social media.

Governor Phil Murphy: “All indoor youth and adult sports are being placed on a full pause – effective 6:00 AM on December 5th through January 2nd, 2021.We’re seeing outbreaks related to indoor sports, and this will help slow the spread. Only exceptions: collegiate-level and professional teams.”

Medium and High Risk Sports Can Resume Under 25% Capacity Limit

October 12, 2020

TRENTON, NJ (MERCER)–Governor Phil Murphy today signed Executive Order No. 187, allowing the resumption of contact practices and competitions in indoor settings for organized sports defined as “medium risk” and “high risk” by the New Jersey Department of Health’s “Guidance for Sports Activities.” The order encompasses sports including hockey, basketball, cheerleading, group dance, rugby, boxing, judo, karate, taekwondo, and wrestling. Governor Murphy previously signed Executive Orders No. 149 and 168, which permitted the resumption of outdoor sports activities, “low risk” practices and competitions in indoor settings, and non-contact indoor practices for “medium risk” and “high risk” sports.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for our student-athletes, support staff, and school communities,” said Governor Murphy. “After consulting stakeholders and medical experts, we have concluded that, with proper public health and safety protocols in place, indoor sports may now resume in a way that protects players, coaches, and staff.”

All indoor practices and competitions are limited to 25% of the capacity of the room, but not more than 25 or less than 10 persons. However, if the number of individuals who are necessary for practice or competition, such as players, coaches, and referees, exceeds 25, the practice or competition may proceed if no unnecessary individuals such as spectators are present. Even if this exception applies, the number of individuals at the practice or competition cannot exceed 25% of the capacity of the room, and such limit cannot exceed 150 persons.

Facilities and participants must abide by a number of health and safety protocols outlined in the Department of Health’s “Guidance for Sports Activities,” such as screenings for athletes, coaches, and staff; limitations on equipment sharing; and requirements for disinfecting and sanitizing surfaces and equipment.

Additionally, sports under the oversight of either the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association or the NCAA must continue to abide by those associations’ rules. All sporting activities must comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and Executive Orders.

The order will take effect immediately.

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ (MERCER)—Back in December Joey Lamparelli broke the Allentown High School record for most wrestling wins with 118 wins. Today at the Mercer County Wrestling Tournament Lamparelli broke the CVC-Colonial Valley Conference, Mercer County all-time wins record with 146 wins so far in his career. In the past four years of high school wrestling Joey has only had ten losses in his career, currently sitting at 146-10. Joey is 30-0 for this season and is a four-time champ of the Mercer County Wrestling Tournament. Lamparelli is also a two-time Region Champ and three-time district champion and a three-time Atlantic City tournament qualifier.

Joey Lamparelli was also given the Mercer County Tournament Association 2020 Most Outstanding Wrestler Award at the end of the tournament.

When asked how it feels to be the most winningest wrestler in the CVC, Joey said, “It feels surreal, all the hard work I’ve put in over the years shows to have paid off and I couldn’t be happier”

Joey stated that he feels good about the rest of the season and feels good about it. “I’ve been close the last two years but I really feel this year is my year to break thorough.” Joey said.

In preparation for the rest of the season Joey stated he will continue to prep for post season by doing the right things and just continuing to perfect his craft.

Joey says his college decision is between the Coast Guard Academy or Muhlenberg College and would continue to wrestle in college. After the season Joey will still be wrestling at clubs and getting ready to wrestle at the next level.

HIGHTSTOWN, NJ (MERCER)–The Allentown Redbird wrestling team fell to the Highstown Rams with a final score of 21-52 tonight.

It was Hightstown’s Senior Night and the Rams locked up the Colonial Division Title at the last home meet of the season. The next match ups for most local teams will be at Robbinsville High School this Saturday for the Mercer County Wrestling Tournament.

ALLENTOWN, NJ (MONMOUTH)—Allentown High School wrestler Nick Golden reached his 100^th career win milestone on Saturday January 25, 2020 at a quad meet in New Brunswick, NJ. Golden is the 5^th Allentown High School wrestler to reach the 100-win milestone. The match was against Jazzarell Bull from New Brunswick with a fall at 1:32 of the first period to get the 100.

Nick, 17 years old is a senior and wrestling in the 170-pound weight class and began wrestling in the 5^th grade. Currently Golden is 100-26 with 65 pins and so far this season 23-1 and is looking for a strong finish this season.

When asking Nick how he sees the rest of the season he says he is continuing to do the right thing with proper nutrition, wrestling club and spending time in the weight room. He is looking forward to the upcoming county, districts and regions in preparation for the state tournament in Atlantic City.

Next year Nick will wrestling at The College of New Jersey next year and has signed a commitment. Nick’s major at TCNJ will be math and looking for a career as an actuary working for an insurance company or major corporation in the future.
