TRENTON (Mercer) – Several pets were killed in a multi-alarm blaze that damaged three homes on Tyler Street this morning (Tuesday, March 8). Trenton firefighters were already busy simultaneously handling several other assignments when a 911 caller reported a house fire on Tyler Street, between South Clinton Avenue and East Canal Street, about 10:20 a.m. A column of smoke was spotted rising up from the area as firefighters responded. Ladder 2 arrived on the scene first and reported heavy fire visible from the rear of the attached three-story homes at 29-31 Tyler Street. It was then discovered that the first-floor kitchen of 29 Tyler Street was engulfed, with flames having already spread to the second floor of that home, as well as to parts of the attached house at 31 Tyler Street. With most city fire companies still unavailable due to the other ongoing incidents, a request was made for mutual aid from Hamilton Township Fire Department. Hamilton sent Squad 12, Truck 13 and Engine 15. On top of that, a second alarm for Trenton fire companies was called at 10:35 a.m. due to the intense radiant heat from the blaze having started to ignite window frames of another house (27 Tyler Street), which was separated from the other two burning homes only by a narrow driveway.  Around 11:15 a.m. it was reported that the bulk of the fire had been knocked down and that at least three pets had been found deceased. The fire was officially declared under control shortly after 11:30 a.m. In addition to the mutual aid that responded to the scene, fire companies from Lawrence, Pennington and Bordentown City responded to stand by at empty Trenton firehouses.
