Wildfire Smoke has created a haze in the sky turning the sun and moon a reddish color.

July 20, 2021

ROBBINSVILLE – HAMILTON, NJ (MERCER)- ALLENTOWN, NJ (MONMOUTH)–The skies were hazy and the sun was a strange color today due to wildfires in the Western United States and Canada that were picked up by air currents and brought to our area.

The National Weather Service Tweeted, “Anyone notice how hazy the skies have looked of late? This is due to smoke from the U.S. wildfires which is getting transported across the country via the jet stream. While most of the smoke is higher in the sky, some of it could make its way closer to the ground.”

The National Weather Service issued a Air Quality Alert today. An Air Quality Action Day for Particulate Matter (PM2.5) has been declared for Tuesday, July 20, 2021 Levels of Particulate Matter (PM2.5) are forecast to rise into the unhealthy for sensitive groups (USG) category due to a plume of smoke, associated with the Canadian wildfires, moving over the region. Sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors.

The good news is that tomorrow cold front will help usher out the smoke but there is potential for strong thunderstorms. The National Weather Service states that Thursday could quite possibly be the best weather day in July.

Good evening everyone,A cold front will help scour out the smoke Wed afternoon, but it will also bring with it the potential for strong thunderstorms capable of damaging winds and large hail.

On a positive note, Thursday may be the nicest day of July! #njwx #dewx #mdwx #pawx pic.twitter.com/I2L47pBiml

On a clear day you would recognize the Allentown water tower but it was covered in smoky haze this evening. Usually a special solar filter is used to take photographs of the sun, smoke was thick enough this evening that no filter was needed. Smoky haze can be seen on I-195 from NJ Turnpike Exit to Route 130 Smoky haze has turned the moon from the normal white appearance to a reddish color. NWS images

A milky appearance to the sky is likely tomorrow due to smoke arriving from West US wildfires. You may see this somewhat today, and we’ve seen it other days this year. But it will be more prominent tomorrow, as models show a denser smoke layer moving in. #NJwx #PAwx #DEwx #MDwx pic.twitter.com/tE3lyIwXkX

July 22, 2021

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector (RGV) Missing Migrant Program (MMP) assisted in the identification of a deceased Guatemalan migrant found in the Delaware River in New Jersey.

On June 30, 2020, an unidentified Guatemalan male was found deceased in the Delaware River.  The New Jersey State Police (NJSP) requested assistance from RGV MMP with their efforts in identifying the subject.  NJSP provided fingerprint images of the individual to the Border Patrol to begin the process.

Border Patrol’s database contains the biometric information for over 200 million people that are otherwise unavailable to other law enforcement agencies.  MMP agents and the RGV Joint Forensic Center (JFC), successfully identify the male as Israel Mario Luciano-Alvarado. The successful identification was confirmed through collaboration with the family, via the Guatemalan Consulate.

This is only one of the many successes of MMP’s “reunification” mission.  Although the program strives to save lives through the deployment of rescue beacons and location placards throughout the RGV’s area of responsibility, the successful identification of decedents provides closure to mourning families. The collaboration of our local, state, and federal partners is a force multiplier in successfully completing the mission of the Border Patrol as well as of many of the agencies we work with.

RGV Sector Chief Brian Hastings stated, “The dedication of this team shows the underlying commitment to challenging situations and compassionate efforts made by both MMP and the investigators with the NJ State Police.”

The public is encouraged to take a stand against crime in their communities and report suspicious activity at 800-863-9382.
