SEASIDE PARK, NJ (0CEAN)–From Friends Of Seaside Park:

Happening now: a whale breached the surface and landed on a boat only a few dozen yards off D Street. The boat is now beached on the shores. We saw the whole thing unfold.

Update:
For those asking, both occupants are okay they were both thrown from the boat. The 🐋 whale kept swimming and breaching. From our view, the whale is totally fine. Appeared to be a humpback.

For those asking for a time frame, it happened around 11:50 am and it was on the trailer at around 3:30pm.

Also it’s World Oceans Day!!!

Governor Murphy Signs Legislation Temporarily Extending Deadlines for Property Tax Appeals and Decisions – MidJersey.News

May 28, 2020

TRENTON, NJ (MERCER)–Governor Phil Murphy today signed legislation (A4157), which temporarily extends the deadline to file a property tax appeal to July 1, 2020, and the deadline for county boards of taxation to render decisions in tax appeal cases to September 30, 2020. The bill takes effect immediately and applies retroactively to April 1, 2020.

“Our current public health crisis has substantially disrupted many of our routine processes, including the ability of New Jersey homeowners to file timely property tax appeals,” said Governor Murphy. “Establishing clear dates for tax appeals and decisions will eliminate the potential for a backlog that would only cause further fiscal uncertainty for taxpayers and municipal governments.”

“The current pandemic has no doubt strained the processes individuals would need to navigate to successfully file an appeal on their property tax assessment,” said Assemblymembers Raj Mukherji and Gordon Johnson in a joint statement. “Giving homeowners and counties time, by extending deadlines, is therefore critical to ensure properties can be fairly assessed and appeals adequately processed. And for families it provides an opportunity to generate savings on tax payments, particularly when many have lost income and become financially vulnerable.”

“The COVID shutdown made it difficult, if not impossible, for many taxpayers to file their appeals by the deadlines which normally fall between April 1 and May 1, a period when many government offices were closed to visitors,” said Senator Paul Sarlo. “This will provide tax payers more time to file appeals and ensures that decisions will be rendered this year so that successful appellants can receive refunds this year. This is a temporary move in response to the crisis we are all experiencing.”

“The extent and duration of the current public health emergency could mean that property tax appeals for the current tax year may not be resolved until 2021, which could create a backlog of appeals that may ultimately delay their resolution,” said Senator Joseph Cryan.“This bill would establish a date certain for filing appeals so that residents and local officials can better manage their finances during these difficult times.”

NORTH HANOVER, NJ (BURLINGTON) — State and military officials gathered Monday to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in a memorial service unlike any in recent memory.

Gov. Phil Murphy, along with leadership from the New Jersey National Guard, held the state’s annual Memorial Day Service at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery.

“This is a solemn day. A day to remember our hallowed and fallen dead. A day to remember those who gave to this nation their full measure,” Murphy said. “And today we also remember that many honored veterans who survived wars, only to die at the hands of COVID-19.”

The holiday ceremony came as the United States nears 100,000 deaths from coronavirus. New Jersey has been gravely impacted with 11,144 deaths, including 16 announced Monday. The state also saw another 965 confirmed cases Monday, bringing its total cases to 155,092

The governor, along with Brigadier General Jemal J. Beale, addressed a socially distanced crowd gathered Monday on the lawn across from the cemetery’s chapel.

Thousands upon thousands of American flags were planted across the cemetery’s 236 acres. Masks covered everyone’s face. The service, held amid the “painful reality” of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Beale, was as somber as the overcast sky.

Officials noted, however, that during these challenging times it was as important as ever to honor those who died serving the United States.

“This Memorial Day is like unlike any other in our lifetime. Although COVID-19 has changed the way we do business and live our daily lives, it has not and will not stop us from taking the pause to remember the brave men and women who died on fields of battle on nearly every continent,” Beale said.

In addition to honoring the fallen, special recognition was given to Commander Col. Robert Martinez and Command Sergeant Major John Hicks, of the New Jersey Army National Guard 42nd Regional Support Group. The unit will be deploying to Middle East in June to support Operation Inherent Resolve. Martinez and Hicks were presented with the New Jersey flag to fly over their base during deployment.

In his closing remarks, Murphy recited a verse from English poet Laurence Binyon’s “For the Fallen,” written at the outbreak of World War I. “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning .We will remember them,” Murphy recited. “I thank you all for continuing this annual tradition. In spite of the most challenging of times, we need this day,” the governor added.

Following the governor’s remarks, a moment of silence was held. The moment of silence ended with a “Jersey strong,” from Beale, and Taps closed out the service.

June 8, 2020

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ (MERCER)–The United States Postal Service recently approved Robbinsville Township’s request to become the primary zip code for the 08691 area.Robbinsville’s official request to change its zip code in August, 2016 was denied after the USPS implemented a flawed and confusing survey process that left residents, along with local, state and federal officials, angry and confused. In addition to deficiencies in mail delivery service, inaccurate zip codes impact car insurance rates and GPS coordinates, among other factors.“We’ve heard our residents loud and clear regarding their desire to have “Robbinsville 08691” be their official postal designation,’’ Mayor Dave Fried said. “This is very good news and big step in the right direction. It may take some time for businesses to update their mailing lists purchased from the post office, but making Robbinsville the primary holder of 08691 was absolutely a battle worth fighting. I want to thank Congressman Chris Smith, Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo and Hamilton Mayor Jeff Martin for their support.”Led by Administrator Joy Tozzi, the Township first mobilized the zip code effort almost 13 years ago. Following the 2016 denial, negotiations with the South Jersey District of the USPS were revived in 2018, at which time the conversation shifted toward Robbinsville being named the “preferred city designation for the zip code 08691.”However, the first attempt at that new compromise floundered when former Hamilton Township Mayor Kelly Yaede refused to sign off on the proposal. Some Hamilton residents and businesses still fall under “Hamilton 08691,” which required the Hamilton Township administration approve the change. The South Jersey District informed Rep. Smiths’ office, located in the 4th Congressional District, that Robbinsville’s request would be “processed upon receipt of a letter from the Mayor of Hamilton. On February 13, 2020, first-term Mayor Jeff Martin submitted a letter to the USPS supporting Robbinsville as the new primary designate for 08691.

“Being a helpful neighbor, especially at no cost, is an easy thing to do,” Mayor Martin said. “Hamilton residents in the 08691 zip code should also receive the benefit of lower insurance costs due to the change. We congratulate Robbinsville on their successful journey and wish all the residents of 08691 well.”

Hamilton and Trenton will remain supplemental designations for 08691. It may take some time before the change is fully implemented, including Robbinsville mail stamped “Trenton 08691” and/or “Hamilton 08691.”

“I am happy to see that the USPS has finally responded to the need for Robbinsville to have the proper postal designation. This not only ensures more reliable mail delivery, but can improve insurance rates and boost a sense of community and pride,” said Rep. Smith, who represents Robbinsville in Congress and petitioned the United States Postal Service to correct flaws in its survey process and establish a more responsive re-designation policy. The Postal Service can be resistant to change, and Mayor Fried’s tenacity and leadership – along with the hard work of many in Robbinsville including Business Administrator Joy Tozzi – overcame many hurdles bringing us to this historic day for Robbinsville residents.”
